A trip to town of Burgas, 22nd of September 2026

On Bulgaria’s Independence Day, we took the children from the Don Bosco Centre who had earned the most points during the 2025–2026 school year on a trip to Burgas.
Our first stop was the Burgas Aviation Museum, where we had the opportunity to explore three aircraft from the inside – a Tu-154, an An-12 and an An-24 – as well as an old MiG-17 fighter jet. We also saw several other aircraft and helicopters on display outdoors. The children found the visit particularly exciting, as it was their first time stepping inside an airplane. They even had the chance to explore the cockpits and sit in the pilots’ seats! An interesting detail was that the interior of the Tu-154 had been specially arranged to resemble the government aircraft used during the communist era.
Our second stop was Burgas Zoo, a privately operated zoo with no concrete enclosures, plenty of greenery and a rich collection of animals and birds. We saw parrots, emus, ibises, monkeys, capybars, panthers, pumas, antelopes, camels, kangaroos and many other fascinating animals. The children were also allowed to feed some of the animals with specially purchased food, which made the experience even more exciting.
Our final stop was the Sea Terminal, where our plan was simply to see the sea, walk along the beach and splash around a little in the water. Of course, for children who were seeing the sea for the very first time, it was almost impossible to stop at “just a little splashing”! We ended our trip with quite a few soaking wet participants, covered in sand. Fortunately, we had brought spare clothes, so everyone managed to get back on the bus dry!

For the first time, our three new volunteers also joined us on the trip. Monika Steingart and Nicole Matyakova will be working with us for eleven months as part of the project “Education – the Key to a Better Future”, 2025-1-BG01-ESC51-VTJ-000346438, co-funded by the European Commission through the European Solidarity Corps programme. We were also joined by Radek Steingart, a former European Voluntary Service (EVS) volunteer, who will be staying with us until mid-August 2027. George Kavarkov who worked on this project true the last season also traveled with us.
